Thanks for your comment Malcolm, you are right that some athletes are dealing with physcial and technical issues as well. However, as you said he is so worried about the physical and technical that he has already missed it in his head. Thus, the key is that anybody (through practice) can mentally put themselves in the place to achieve their best (Howard has 60% career average) given those physical and technical issues.

I agree with your assessment of Turkulo, he is normally a highly efficient free throw shooter, I agree he was probably distracted by the occassion rather than focussing on the process.

However, re: Howard, he has never been able to consistently shoot free throws (either normal or post season) & I bet he practices a lot. His issues are physical (his hands are so big, he can’t “feel” the ball, his normal shot is the dunk), poor technique or action, plus mental, he’s so worried about the first 2, he’s already mentally missed.

Great blog. I guess what makes a sportsman a great one is there ability to bounce back in seconds from a bad situations to a more dominating one.The world is full of these kind of greats.

I just listened to an interview with Federer after his win and he stated how lucky he has been to have played so consistently well without injury. He also stated that when he became Number 1 in the world he put a number of ROUTINES in place to keep his performance up. Just one of the strategies that he uses to stay Mentally Tough!
